E-Skin to Change Gadget Colors

Researchers at Philips have developed a new color e-paper technology, dubbed e-skin, that that can change the color and appearance of a device to match the user's mood, environment, or even their outfit. The first applications using the technology could be e-skins for small devices such as MP3 players or cell phones.

The e-skin technology is simple, cost-efficient and green, and should be easily adaptable to new applications.

"The technology is highly scalable," says Kars-Michiel Lenssen, principal scientist at Philips Research. Indeed, the e-skin has the potential to be used in the future for larger area ‘e-wallpapers’, where you can adjust the color of your wall, or smart windows, to regulate the daylight coming through your window.

This new technology will be presented at the International Display Workshops 2009 in Japan. Get the full story, with Chroma Chameleon.

How Google Nexus One Invites System Will Work?

How Google Nexus One Invites System Will Work?
GO Rumors

There has been a lot of buzz lately about Google’s upcoming mobile phone, named Nexus One. However, the biggest point of contention is how anyone can purchase a device themselves. It is implicitly understood that the whole distribution will be via an invites system, and that Nexus One wouldn’t be available outside this – at retail stores.

So, how will the whole thing pan out. From what we know till now, this is the possible way forward:

1. Google has been sending invites to people for a “special android media event” to be held on January 5. We do know that it is all about the Nexus One.

2. As part of the media event, the attendees will be given free invites that they may pass along to those in their network who want to buy a Nexus One.

3. All those who have an invite to purchase a Nexus One can proceed to the Google Phone website (not yet live) to make their purchase.

4. As part of the purchase, users will be required to register themselves at the site.

5. Once these users register themselves, they shall be given additional invites to send it to their network.

6. The Google Phone website shall also become the destination for all future software upgrades.

So as you see, the system shall pretty much work like it did when Gmail was first introduced or as it has now been working with Google Wave. And Google has all the while known to keep the demand high above the supply in order to make their product tantalizingly attractive.

Considering that Google Wave invites sold for close to $70 on eBay, expect a lot more Nexus One auctioning to happen early next year.

Music While You Cook?

Are you fed up of popping food into the microwave, hitting the timer, and then hanging around with nothing to do while waiting for your meal? Well, you might soon be watching your favorite YouTube clips instead of the plate, with Japan's new Castoven invention.

The kitchen is going musical, as researchers from Japan’s Keio University have invented a new kind of microwave: the Castoven, a web-enabled futuristic gadget with a 10.4-inch LCD and built-in speakers.

The idea is to display a YouTube video whose length matches the time you need to heat up whatever you are cooking. So, if you need to cook something for, 1 minute and 5 seconds, the Castoven will automatically pull a video from YouTube with the same length, and put it on the screen. When the video stops, your food is ready!

File Compression Technology

Why we need to compress files?
Some times files are too big to be transferred through the Internet or between PCs. This post will help to use the WinZip program to compress files for quick transfer and storage.
What is winzip?
Winzip is used to compress the files into smaller so that they can be easily transfered.WinZip is the one of many programs able to compress files, in this case to what are known as Zip files with the filename extension .zip
How to install winzip?
You can download a trial version of WinZip from www.winzip.com
After the trial period is over you will be reminded to purchase a License to continue using the program.

How to use winzip?
To start the program, double-click the WinZip shortcut on your desktop, or alternatively click on the Start menu then All Programs > WinZip > WinZip.
Click on Use Evaluation Version. You should now see the WinZip Wizard, which helps you perform the most common tasks associated with WinZip. Click Next and for this example, Create A New Zip File.
Choose a filename such as "ZipTest" which will be saved to the default folder, or use Browse to choose a different folder, enter the filename and click OK.Click Next. Use the Add Files button to add the files you want to compress, or you can click and drag them into the empty box. When you have added the file or files you want to compress into this Zip file, click ZipNow then Finish.
WinZip will close and if you now look in My Documents or whichever folder you specified earlier, you should see a .zip file called "ZipTest". To open this or any other Zip file, in Windows XP you can double-click it as if it were a normal folder. From here you can drag the files out, which will extract them so they can be used as normal.
Alternatively, right-click the file and choose Open With WinZip. Click Evaluation Version and you should see the Wizard again.
Click Next then UnZip or Install from "ZipTest.zip". Click Next and choose a folder to extract the contents of the Zip file to (the default location is a folder called Unzipped in My Documents).
Click Unzip Now. In the folder you specified you should now be able to see the files you originally compressed in the Zip file, extracted and ready to use again. Click Finish in WinZip to close the program.

new Promethean technology

Two teachers at Madison Elementary School demonstrated how the latest technology has left the old black chalkboards once used in the classrooms even further in the dust.

The Promethean boards resemble by size and shape small portable movie screens, except the boards are rigid and mounted onto classroom walls. In addition, the boards are connected to computers, so instead of just displaying pictures and words, the users can interact with the devices and move the items on the screen.

Tweeting by Thinking

In April, University of Wisconsin doctoral student Adam Wilson — working with adviser Justin Williams, above — tweeted 23 characters just by thinking. He focused his attention on one flashing letter after another on a computer screen while wearing a cap outfitted with electrodes that monitored changes in his brain activity to figure out which character he wanted. His efforts spelled out "USING EEG TO SEND TWEET," among other messages.

Wake Up to the Laser Alarm Clock

The laser alarm clock is a new invention that truly challenges you to get out of bed in the morning. To switch it off, you are required to sit up in bed, aim carefully with a battery-powered laser pistol that is sold with the alarm clock, and hit the target that sits on top of the clock.
Until you hit the target, the alarm clock continues to ring.

By the time you have succeeded, say the clock’s designers, you should be well awake and well-prepared for the rest of the day!

Juggling Increases Brain Power

Complex tasks such as juggling produce significant changes to the structure of the brain and could, in the long term, aid treatments for certain neurological diseases, according to scientists at Oxford University in the UK.

The team from Oxford’s Department of Clinical Neurology says it saw a 5 percent increase in white matter - the cabling network of the brain - on people who had been trained to juggle for six weeks, with brain scans before and after. Changes in grey matter, where the processing and computation in the brain happens, have been shown before, but enhancements in the white matter have not previously been demonstrated.

Professor Cathy Price, of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, said: "It’s extremely exciting to see evidence that training changes human white matter connections. This complements other work showing grey matter changes with training and motivates further work to understand the cellular mechanisms underlying these effects."

Google Fast Flip

Google is testing a new service, Fast Flip, which lets you browse through recent headlines and feeds from news Web sites. Google introduced an experimental news hub called Fast Flip that allows users to view news articles from dozens of major publishers and flip through them as quickly as they would the pages of a magazine.
Fast Flip, which is available at fastflip.googlelabs.com, first appears as a collection of images of news articles that Google has culled from the sites of its partners. The articles are displayed side by side in various horizontal rails that show them arranged by popularity; sections like politics, business, travel or entertainment; topics like tennis, Iran or the Beatles; and news source.

The First Halal Search Engine Launched

The last few years Muslims have become very active on the Internet
. The lack of tools for Muslims to be able to continue their online activities responsibly has inspired
ImHalal.com to enter the search engine market.

Potential Muslim internet users who might previously have
avoided the internet for some of its less wholesome content, now have a safe option in the new search engine
Imhalal.com.

While internet use has increased steadily in the Middle East and North Africa over the last few of years, many potential users have stayed away due to religious concerns over the content. The search engine will not return results considered harmful, forbidden content, instead it will only show results that are halal, approved, under Muslim religious law.

Sardeha has high hopes and more plans for the future. "In one month's time we hope to add Islamic widgets such as prayer time so that you can easily find out when to pray or when you come to the website you will see a quote from the Qur'an. We are marketing Imhalal as a social homepage for Muslim households" He said.

"Imhalal is not a dictatorial or censorship website, we want people to be able to continue their online search," commented Sardeha.

The search engine uses 'various techniques' to determine which results are Halal (acceptable) or Haraam (forbidden).

What are your thoughts on this?

Unique Identity Cards for All Indians

The former CEO of Infosys, Nandan Nilekani, has taken up the challenge of heading a Government of India initiative that seeks to provide all Indians with an unique identity card (ID).

In February 2009, the Government of India envisioned a project for providing unique IDs to all Indians. To bring more accountability to this massive project, it asked the former CEO of Infosys, Nandan Nilekani, to head it.

The decade-long project, which Nandan calls, “the mother of all IT projects,” seeks to provide each of India’s 1.2 billion people with an ID card embedded with a microchip. This would help build a massive national database and bring a new accountability to the system. Most importantly, the project could enable millions of poor Indians to gain access to much-needed financial aid and social services.

Self Destructing Web Content

Self Destructing Web Content

Vanish! It is the new tool to delete online data. Developed by the University of Washington, Vanish allows data, messages, files, and other web content to self-destruct after a certain time. Soon, emails, Facebook messages, and Google documents can all be set to disappear into thin air by using Vanish, if assistant professor Yoshi Kohno, who designed the software had his way.

There is so much data now created, shared, and stored online, as opposed to on individual computers. And, documents could remain online for years, even after the user deleted the original file. Vanish would ensure that even archived or backed-up copies of the data are unreadable after the time limit set by the original user.

While it is a great technological advancement, this technology can easily be misused. Professor Kohno too acknowledges that the software could be used for ill intent.

The most common mistakes range from sending an e-mail to the wrong person, accidentally sending out salary information or other personal data to the entire staff, unwittingly e-mailing a new job search to the boss, and sending personal photos as attachments instead of business spreadsheets.

Always giving your e-mail your individed attention and thinking twice before hitting the "Reply all" button are the best means of avoiding what can be unforgiveable errors.

"Email mistakes can be painfully visible and viral," says Megan Slabinski, Executive Director of the Creative Group. "Professionals must be especially careful in this economy not to do anything that could cause employers to question their competence or judgment, and that means paying close attention when sending any kind of message, particularly if the information is sensitive."

There are utilites like those at SperrySoftware.com or SlipStick .com that will prevent a majority of these problems.Of course, no tool can overcome that most insidious of problems - the lack of thinking before hitting Send
