iChromy iPad Browser
You can also save pages to read them offline and send pages to other third-party services, including Facebook, Evernote, Twitter, Instapaper, and Diigo. The latter service is key as this app is actually the creation of the bookmarking service Diigo, and for users of the site, the easy integration with one's saved bookmarks might be reason alone to use the new iPad browser.
iChromy isn't particularly feature-rich, and it's missing some elements that other iPad browsers have, including the ability to set a Web page to your home screen.
But if you're a fan of tabbed browsing, then you might be quite pleased with iChromy. The stability and speed of the app are pretty impressive. In order to avoid memory issues with having multiple tabs open, iChromy reloads tabs dynamically when you need to access them again.
The app is free, but Diigo says future releases of iChromy will have more advanced options that coincide with Diigo's own annotation and highlighting features, which are part of Diigo's premium bookmarking services. (Via RWW)

Microsoft releases a new Bing Maps software development kit
According to a post on Microsoft’s Bing Maps Blog, the new software development kit gives developers a set of Objective C classes to develop iPhone and iPad applications within Xcode, along with documentation and several sample projects to help them get started quickly. In addition, the iOS map control supports Bing’s road, aerial and hybrid aerial map styles, and includes the ability to add pushpins to the maps and access the user’s location via the GPS to locate the phone on the map, the post said.
“The launch of the iOS SDK goes a long way toward rounding out Bing’s toolset for mobile developers,” the blog post issued by the Microsoft Bing Maps Team, said. “In addition to the iOS SDK, developers can also use the Bing Maps SDK for Windows Phone and the community-driven SDK for Android development. Add to these our long list of tools and services for web development and it equals a mapping service with the scale and scope to support a wide range of mapping projects.”
Also in the post, the team said to enhance performance of the platform, they separated the Bing Maps Controls from the Bing Maps services to lighten the load. This means developers can use the Bing Maps iOS Control in conjunction with the Bing Maps REST Services API – for geocoding and routing -- to build a fully featured mobile map application. Additionally, users can hit Bing search services to pull local listing information. And developers can integrate Bing Maps into consumer-facing mobile applications for free.
“We think you will find that the terms of use are less restrictive than what you find with the Apple Map Kit, with no sacrifice in functionality,” the Microsoft post said, adding, “Sign up for a free Bing Maps Key, then download the .zip file to get the control and SDK, and you’re off and running!”

Rootkit writers outfox Windows 64-bit PatchGuard protection
A product of the BlackHole Exploit Kit, a hugely successful kit for building malware to hit specific software vulnerabilities, the first element of the attack on a system is straightforward enough, using a downloader to hit the system through two common Java and Adobe Reader software flaws.
On 64-bit Windows systems open to these exploits, this calls a 64-bit rootkit, Rootkit.Win64.Necurs.a., which executes the ‘bcdedit.exe –set TESTSIGNING ON command, normally a programming command for trying out drivers during development.
It appears that the developers of the latest rogue AV program for MacOS are actively distributing it via intermediaries, who don’t really understand what it is they are supposed to install on users’ computers,” said Kaspersky researcher, Vyacheslav Zakorzhevsky, in his blog covering the malware.
This underlines the ominous way that Macs are now seen as just another platform to be targeted where possible using multi-platform malware.

Using twitter hashtags
Another simple tip: give your hashtag context. Most people won’t actually know what your hashtag means, so give a quick explanation in one of your tweets or, if you’re making a hashtag, make it very apparent what it’s talking about.
Finally, if you’re looking to create a hashtag, be sure that it adds value for yourself and your followers. The best way to utilize them is when you need to organize information. Conferences, major events, and even reminders (i.e. #todo) can help organize specific tweets and make life easier on you and your followers.
The Twitter Fan Wiki also has some interesting reading material on hashtags if you’re looking to further your hashtag education.

Backblaze Includes Locator for Stolen PCs
The Locate My Computer feature allows users to see the ISP, IP address, and geo-location of the computer if it has been stolen or misplaced.
Backblaze, a fast-rising 2-year-old online backup provider based in San Mateo, Calif., on May 23 launched a new service called Locate My Computer, which enables users to locate their lost or stolen computers. Locate My Computer allows users to see the ISP, IP address, and geo-location of the computer if it has been misplaced. PC owners can even view the thief's files if the computer is still backing up files and, in fact, was pilfered.
Locate My Computer is free of charge and available immediately to all Backblaze customers.
Citrix Acquires Virtual Desktop Provider Kaviza
Kaviza, which makes the VDI-in-a-Box product, and Citrix have been strategic partners since April 2010, so it's not a big surprise to industry insiders that this deal was made.
Kaviza and Citrix, of nearby Santa Clara, Calif., have been strategic partners since April 2010, so the transaction was not a big surprise to industry insiders.
Kaviza's VDI-in-a-Box, a plug-and-play virtual desktop system that has been gaining traction, enables just about anyone (not necessarily an IT specialist) to get a deployment up and running for a small or midsize business. Kaviza's solution truly is an automated, turnkey way to do it; users install the software on a commodity server, and the software finds all the system nodes automatically.
Citrix, the world's second-largest VDI provider (behind only Hewlett-Packard), needed the IT that Kaviza brought to the table because it had not previously addressed the SMB space with a purpose-built VDI offering. Most of Citrix's customers are large enterprises.
When Kaviza is running, the virtual desktop runs in its own browser-type window with all the application functionality needed. Little or no latency is apparent. Users can continue to use their local applications as normal.

Google to Unveil Online Music Service
Google, like Amazon, hasn't secured licenses from the four major recorded-music companies, according to these people, and is likely to include a system that functions much like a remote hard drive.
Users of the service are expected to be able to listen to songs they have uploaded to the service in a so-called streaming mode but won't be able to download the files themselves. That limit appears to be a bid by Google to hinder the service from being used to spread pirated music.
A Google spokeswoman had no comment.
Google is likely to announce the service Tuesday at its annual Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco, these people said. Initially, the service is to operate in a testing mode, and not be available to the public at large.
The service is unlikely to be tied to an online music store like Amazon MP3, which gives users the option of adding new songs to their music locker at the time they buy them.
The system Google is likely to unveil is known within the technology and music industries as a "passive" locker. Such systems generally are believed by people in the music industry not to require licenses from record companies. But that kind of system also tends to offer a fairly limited set of features. Amazon Cloud, for instance, is considered by many in the industry to be a first step toward a more ambitious offering that Amazon could create once it has licenses in place.
With licenses from music companies, a locker-service operator could give users instant access to songs stored in central servers, rather than making those users upload every song in their music collections.
The launch comes as Apple Inc. is in negotiations with major record labels to secure licenses for a much more robust online music service than either Amazon's or the one Google has in the works, according to these people. It is unclear when Apple might launch such a service, but most of the technical work has been complete for months, according to people familiar with the matter. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.
Spotify AB, based in Sweden and the U.K., has been attempting for months to secure licenses that would allow it to launch its music service in the U.S., but it hasn't been able to persuade major music companies to let it bring the service, which is popular in Europe, to the U.S.
That is mainly because record-company executives don't believe that Spotify makes enough money. Recent limits on how much music a user can listen to without paying could make the service more attractive to record labels, according to people familiar with the matter.
Many record companies felt blindsided by the launch of Amazon Cloud, and the Seattle-based online retail company hasn't significantly upgraded its service since it launched.

Apple iOS 4.3.3 Software Update Fixes Location Bug
Apple’s new iOS 4.3.3 Software Update is designed to fix the location-tracking “bug” that caused the company so much recent controversy.
“This update contains changes to the iOS crowd-sourced location database cache,” reads an explanation posted on Apple’s iTunes service. Those changes include a reduction in the size of the cache, a total deletion of the cache whenever Location Services are turned off and stopping the cache from backing up to iTunes. The update applies to iOS 4 devices on both the AT&T and Verizon networks.
Apple’s controversy first erupted after researcher Alasdair Allan wrote about iOS 4’s supposed location-sniffing abilities in an April 20 posting on the O’Reilly Radar blog. Working with co-researcher Pete Warden, he released an open-source iPhone Tracker application that can plot stored location data on a map.
“The database of your locations is stored on your iPhone as well as in any of the automatic backups that are made when you sync it with iTunes,” Allan wrote as part of a FAQ about removing the data. “One thing that will help is choosing encrypted backups, since that will prevent other users or programs on your machine from viewing the data, but there will still be a copy on your device.”
Location data saved by iOS 4 apparently included information gleaned from cell towers and the names of WiFi access points, and not actual GPS data from a tablet or smartphone.
In a FAQ posted on its corporate Website, Apple attempted to clarify its position on location-logging.
“The iPhone is not logging your location,” reads one section. “Rather, it’s maintaining a database of WiFi hotspots and cell towers around your current location, some of which may be located more than 100 miles away from your iPhone, to help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested.”
Apple also insists the iPhone only stores a protected subset of that total crowd-sourced database. “The location data that researchers are seeing on the iPhone is not the past or present location of the iPhone,” adds the FAQ.
In recent days, both Apple and Google have come under government pressure to reveal how they collect and store location data. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan asked to meet with executives from both companies to discuss privacy issues; that followed inquiries from U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), who fired off letters to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking for greater clarification on news that the iPhone and 3G-enabled iPad running iOS 4 have been saving location data.
Other recent news reports have suggested that smartphones running Android are transmitting location data to Google.

Oracle Enables iPad Access to Latest BI Apps
Talk about a mass enterprise migration to a single new device—to the Apple iPad, naturally.
If you're a software developer, independent or otherwise, and you're not revamping your application to run on the world's most popular tablet PC, then how out of sync are you with the rest of the IT world?
Oracle's certainly not in that category. On May 3 the giant IT software and systems maker announced that its latest Business Intelligence Release (v11.1.1.5) now features support for the iPad. It has supported the iPhone since right after its introduction.
The new BI release provides 24/7 access to a range of alerts, ad hoc analyses, dashboards, reporting, "what-if"-type analysis, and unified relational OLAP and multidimensional OLAP content of Oracle Business Intelligence, Oracle Vice President of Business Intelligence Product Management Paul Rodwick told eWEEK.
"We're seeing a clear market interest in access to BI on the iPad tablet," Rodwick said. "For years, Oracle BI has supported iPhone, and proactively send alerts out to a range of mobile devices. But the form factor of the iPad, the larger geometry and good browser capability all add up.
"Plus, so many of the knowledge workers, sales reps and others are buying them. It all adds up to a lot of interest in having their corporate information and BI data available to go."
The new release also introduces extended support for additional data sources that include Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, Oracle OLAP, Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services and SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW), Rodwick said.
Oracle BI applications are prebuilt analytical solutions for Oracle and non-Oracle applications—including SAP. Subject areas include Financial, Human Resources, Procurement and Spend, Projects, Supply Chain and Order Management, Contact Center Telephony, Loyalty, Marketing, Price, Sales, Service, and a range of vertical industries.
