Samsung unveils digital video store Media Hub

Samsung on Thursday announced, a digital video store called Media Hub where users will be able to download movies and TV shows onto Samsung phones, the upcoming Galaxy Tab device and personal computers.

Renting a movie will cost $3 to $5 and buying one will cost $10 to $15. TV shows cost $2 per episode and cannot be rented.

Samsung's Media Hub files will be wrapped in copyright protection, which limits the number of devices that can store each video to five.

Videos are also confined to the small screens. While some devices, including Samsung's upcoming tablet computer, have the ability to transmit video to a TV, the Media Hub content won't display on an external screen.

Samsung's Galaxy S smart phones will gain access to Media Hub later this month. The Galaxy Tab, an Android tablet with a 7-inch touch screen, will also have the store. Software for PCs will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, Kim said.

Microsoft launches IE9 beauty of the web

Microsoft launches the beta version of the browser internet explorer(IE9) in an event at the San Francisco Design Center. The software is now available for free download at

Microsoft says that IE9 is a reinvention of the browser. It not only includes greater HTML5 and web standard compliance, but also the ability to turn any website into an application on the Windows taskbar. Thee websites are pinned to the taskbar, providing users with a one-click option to a their favorite websites.


IE9 makes what’s easy and familiar for Windows users available for websites and the people who browse them. Users can pin sites in the taskbar just as they pin applications, and launch web tasks directly, the same way they launch everything else in Windows. Websites can program jump lists for pinned sites, to make common tasks easier for their users as part of the desktop experience. Sites can also program notifications when the user pins them in the task bar. The browser has a clean new design that reinforces the site’s visuals, with a large site icon, and that icon’s colors reflected in the back and forward buttons. IE9 does far more than provide shortcuts to sites on the desktop and reduce the space used in the browser interface.


All but the most essential interface elements in the browser have been removed or hidden in IE9, by default. As a result, the contents of the site you’re viewing don’t have to fight with logos, toolbars, menus, and buttons. There’s no search box in the upper right corner. The command bar and Favorites bar are hidden. There’s no status bar along the bottom. The Refresh and Stop button are in gray instead of color, and three gray buttons in the upper right corner offer access to the Home page, Favorites, and Tools, respectively. (All of those buttons change to color if you pass a mouse pointer over them.) Tabs for open pages are smaller, crisper in design, and located in a band to the right of the address bar. The only element that’s bigger and brighter than its predecessor is the blue Back button in the top left corner.


One Box – The address bar in IE9 still doubles as a search field, but it now has more capabilities. The default search engine is obviously Bing, but you can install Google, Wikipedia, Amazon, Facebook and lots of others through the Add-On page. We're actually becoming bigger fans of Bing by the day, and keeping it as the default search engine has its advantages: typing in terms like "Weather NYC" brought up the temperature and conditions inline, and typing a name like "Hillary Clinton" an image of our lovely Secretary of State. The bar also displays history results.


Download manager – Can we get a loud "finally" on this one!? Yes, IE9 adds a real download manager that lets you see what you've recently downloaded as well as see the progress of a current download. Our program downloads appeared in the manager, but oddly a picture download didn't. It also has a SmartScreen Filter, as it's been dubbed, that alerts you to security issues. Alerts appear within the browser window now rather than as a pop-up.


IE9 will also have more security features that makes it easier for people to check on the risks of downloading software, and remove it if it's been downloaded.

Russian scientist discovers anti-ageing drug

Vladimir Skulachyov, a bioenergetics professor in Moscow, says he has been working on this for more than 40 years. The treatment is based on how oxygen reacts in the body and says the difficult part has been to try and prevent side effects.


If the wonder drug lives up to its promise, the implications could be huge in preventing ageing and increasing the prospect of a longer and better quality of life.


99% of the time oxygen turns into harmless water, but there's that one per cent that turns into a super-oxide that later turns into very poisonous elements," said Skulachyov.


The Russian scientist says the medicine will go on sale in just a few years. The treatment looks complicated and it certainly is. For Skulachyov, it is almost a life's work. Two more years of testing and the doctor thinks he will have finally cracked the enigma of aging.

Twitter Announces a New Media-Rich Twitter.com

Twitter revealed a site revamp that changes the interface, introduces new features and promises to be "faster, easier and richer."

Twitter is getting rid of its single-panel interface of streaming tweets and updating it with two panes, making the site more interactive and user-friendly.


The left side will look familiar—this is where your tweet stream will appear as well as your actions (@Mentions, retweets, lists, etc.). The left side of your stream will display a visibly larger reorganization of information, such as your followers, who you're following, favorite tweets, lists, trends and suggestions of who to follow.
The new interface is clean and well organized. Lists and trends are easier to view (requiring less scrolling) than with the old Twitter.


2. Embedded media.
If you clicked on a TwitPic link in the old Twitter, the link would send you to the external site. Clicking on a TwitPic link in the new Twitter, however, will display the photo on the right half of the page—without leaving Twitter.com. You'll also see more information such as other tweets that have linked to that same image.


Videos, too, will be embedded. If you click on a tweet containing a link to a YouTube video, the video will pay right on Twitter.com instead of redirecting you to YouTube. This eliminates the hassle of closing multiple browser tabs once you're done viewing.


During the announcement, Twitter noted that it has "done deals with 16 media providers," some of which include YouTube, TwitPic, Etsy, Flickr and Ustream, but didn't address specifics of the deals.

Scientists Make Artificial Skin in Robotics

Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed a new technology that may help robots feel, give the sense of touch back to those with prosthetic limbs, and ultimately help robots do the dishes without breaking them (and while they're at it, maybe make a sandwich without turning it into land of the flatlanders).

Biotech wizards have engineered electronic skin that can sense touch, in a major step towards next-generation robotics and prosthetic limbs.

The lab-tested material responds to almost the same pressures as human skin and with the same speed, they reported in the British journal Nature Materials.

Important hurdles remain but the exploit is an advance towards replacing today's clumsy robots and artificial arms with smarter, touch-sensitive upgrades, they believe.

"Humans generally know how to hold a fragile egg without breaking it," said Ali Javey, an associate professor of computer sciences at the University of California at Berkeley, who led one of the research teams.

"If we ever wanted a robot that could unload the dishes, for instance, we'd want to make sure it doesn't break the wine glasses in the process. But we'd also want the robot to grip the stock pot without dropping it."

The "e-skin" has the capability of sensing not only touch but also pressure. Imagine a robot setting the table and being able to feel the amount of pressure to place on dinnerware. The possibilities are endless, and the benefit to mankind is enormous.

This is a simple note-taking app. It allows you to create different notes and checklists, and give them a specific title and color. You can lock your notes with a password. You can sort your notes alphabetically, by time created or by color. You can also do a search for quick access. The app also allows you to backup and import your notes from SD card, and add “stickies” to your home screen. The downside is that you cannot share, SMS or email your notes.

Document scanner/ Portable scanner:

This app scans documents using your phone camera, and converts them into PDF files. You can then email the files, save them to your SD card, or upload to Google docs. On the downside, this Beta app will soon go paid.

Flashlight:

Great for when you want to find your way around in the theater! This app has options such as a color flashlight, strobe light, blink, spiral, candle and more.

Handcent/ ChompSMS:

The default SMS applications typically leave a lot to be desired. With these applications, you can take customization to a whole new level. This includes changing fonts, font sizes, background colors and images, speak your SMS, blacklist, search, add signature and display messages in iPhone like bubble style.

Folder Organizer lite:

Once you have a whole bunch of apps downloaded, your next problem will be quick and easy access. Simply having them on your home screen will be messy. New 120-Megapixel CMOS sensor from Canon

Canon has developed a new 120-Megapixel CMOS sensor that is capable of shooting at 9.5fps, besides recording Full HD movies.

That’s about 7.5 times larger and 2.4t times improvement in resolution when compared to Canon’s existing highest-resolution commercial CMOS sensor of the same size. The 120-Megapixel APS-H-size sensor has 13,280 x 9,184 pixels, while the imaging area of the newly developed sensor measures approximately 29.2mm x 20.2mm. Thus far, Canon has yet to comment on the implementation of this huge-ass sensor on their upcoming products.

The new CMOS sensor makes possible a maximum output speed of approximately 9.5 frames per second, supporting the continuous shooting of ultra-high-resolution images.

Canon’s newly developed CMOS sensor also incorporates a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) video output capability. The sensor can output Full HD video from any approximately one-sixtieth-sized section of its total surface area.

Images captured with Canon’s newly developed approximately 120-megapixel CMOS image sensor, even when cropped or digitally magnified, maintain higher levels of definition and clarity than ever before. Additionally, the sensor enables image confirmation across a wide image area, with Full HD video viewing of a select portion of the overall frame.

NOTE: Canon’s current highest-resolution commercial CMOS sensor is employed in the company’s EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR cameras, is equivalent to the full-frame size of the 35 mm film format and incorporates approximately 21.1 million pixels. In 2007, the company successfully developed an APS-H-size sensor with approximately 50 million pixels.

You can now "pin" your favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. You can also rearrange them by clicking and dragging. The ‘show desktop’ button at the extreme right of the bar is also very useful, with options to view or access the desktop instantly.

Shake files!

If you have many windows open and want all but the one you are working on minimized, you simply need to grab the top of the window and shake it about! Also, thanks to Aero Peek technology, you can view thumbnails of open applications by mousing over its application button. If you mouse the thumbnail, the full corresponding window will come to the forefront, and all other windows will turn into transparent ‘glass sheets.’

Jumplists

This new feature gives you an application-wise view of a list of files you have recently accessed. You just need to right click the application icon on the task bar to view this list. Alternatively, drag the application button toward the desktop. This feature is also integrated into the Start Menu.

Snap to half

If you need to work on two documents simultaneously, simply drag your window to the left or right edge of the screen. The window will resize and snap to occupy one half of the screen. Repeat with the other window and they are locked next to each other. To maximize it again, drag the window to the top of the screen. The same effect can be achieved through keyboard shortcuts (Win + respective arrow keys).

Enable virtual wi-fi

Windows 7 includes a little-known new feature called Virtual Wi-Fi, which effectively turns your PC or laptop into a software-based router. Any other Wi-Fi-enabled devices within range - a desktop, laptop, an iPod perhaps - will "see" you as a new network and, once logged on, immediately be able to share your internet connection. This will only work if your wireless adapter driver supports it, though.

Homegroup networking

It is now a lot easier to share documents – you just need to use the ‘Homegroup’ wizard, and check the default folders you would like to share. You will be given a passcode that needs to be entered on other computers on the same network to share the files. Also, Windows Media Player allows you to stream music directly to another computer on the network. The only catch is that only computers running Windows 7 can join a Homegroup.

Google Launches Real-Time Search Page

Google launched a new search page Thursday that displays real-time results, making reports from Twitter and other sites searchable within seconds of being posted.

Google's effort underscores the importance of real-time data on social media, in an increasingly competitive Internet search arena which it dominates. Microsoft in October also announced partnerships with Twitter and Facebook to provide real-time search results.

The idea is to give people one place to find timely information about an earthquake or other major event that just happened, said Dylan Casey, a product manager at Google.

Google has added a location tool that can zero in on a specific geographic area so you can see tweets near you. Google also gives the option of a conversation view so that you can follow the responses to tweets without having to click through a bunch of links. The tweets are organized from oldest to newest.

You can also create a news alert that will update you when the topic pops up on Twitter or other services.

“We are focused on making it even easier to get access to real-time search results,” Casey said. “Real-time search is still a core feature of Google search and we will continue to focus on delivering the best search results. We just understand sometimes people want to go directly to real-time search.”

Casey said he has already found the product very useful: He has been using the real-time search page to get instant feedback on the rollout.

Call phones from Gmail

Google introduced a new feature that allows you to make telephone calls from Gmail

For years, Gmail users have been able to talk over their computers or video chat. But they could not call a mobile phone or landline.
Now they can click “call phone,” in the chat tab on Gmail and then dial the number on a telephone keypad.
Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free of charge for the first year. Calls to other countries will be as low as 2 cents a minute. The rates are similar to Skype, which is owned by private equity firms and auction giant EBay. It is looking to raise as much as $100 million in an initial public offering.
The service works with Google Voice, the company’s phone and voicemail service. Users of that service can now choose “computer” as one way to receive calls.Google is rolling out the new feature over the next few days.For more information, visit gmail.com/call

Clicker launches iPhone app

Clicker.com, a programming guide for online video and television, has come to the smaller screen

The app is a companion to the website. Users can search the database for all shows or just the iPhone-friendly ones, see what their friends are watching or what everyone on Clicker.com is watching, rate or share shows, manage their playlist remotely and check in or earn rewards.

Clicker.com, which is on track to serve 1.5 million users in August, plans to launch an iPad app in October.

A Website browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the internet.

WorldWideWeb was the world’s first web browser and was introduced on February 26, 1991, by British scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and ran on the NeXTSTEP platform. It was later renamed Nexus to avoid confusion with the World Wide Web.

The World’s First Graphical Browser was Erwise and it was developed by four Finnish college students in 1991.
Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) beginning in late 1992. NCSA released the browser in 1993, and officially discontinued development and support on January 7, 1997.

A film on Google

A film on search engine 'Google' and its founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin is in the making.

Groundswell Productions, who made the Sean Penn starrer 'Milk', has acquired the rights to Ken Auletta's book 'Googled: The End Of The World As We Know It', which will be the basis for the screenplay, Deadline reported online.
The film will look at the ethos of the two men on how money can be made 'without doing evil'.
"It's about these two young guys who created a company that changed the world, and how the world in turn changed them.
Sergey and Larry, often dubbed the 'Google Guys', founded the company while attending Stanford University as Ph.D candidates.
From a search engine, it now hosts and develops a number of Internet-based services and products with over one million servers in data centers around the world and processing over one billion search requests every day.

"The intention is to be sympathetic to Sergey and Larry, and hopefully the film will be as interesting as the company they created," London said.
