VB Developers Can Now Publish Windows Phone 7 Apps

Microsoft announced that its Visual Basic add-on for Windows Phone Developer Tools is now available in its final RTW version ("Release to Web"). With this add-on, Visual Basic developers who have built Silverlight applications and games for the Windows Phone 7 platform can finally ship their apps after months of testing and then have those apps published in the official Windows Phone Marketplace.

UberTwitter app now available for iPhone

Twitter application, UberTwitter has finally arrived on the iPhone. The company has announced a variety of features for the iPhone app. In addition to traditional Twitter client features – such as composing and sending tweets, retweeting, direct messaging and embedded link shortening – UberTwitter allows users to read tweets faster and more easily.

As the company explains on their site, “Either by tapping the tweet in portrait mode or turning the phone to landscape mode, users will be able to view and use content from any embedded link (e.g., webpage, photo or video) instantaneously without leaving the app or opening a new page within an app.”  This is known as the UberView preview and is one of the more innovative features UberTwitter provides.

The current version is still in beta, with the 1.0 version on track for December.

Acer Unveils 7-inch and 10.1-inch Android Tablets and a 4.8-inch Smartphone

Acer is placing its bets behind Android with the announcement of a 7-inch tablet, a 10.1-inch tablet and a 4.8-inch smartphone based off of Google’s mobile OS.

The unnamed tablets sport 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, an eye-popping 1280×800 screen resolution and 1080p HDMI capacity. The 10.1″ tablet is 13.3mm thick, making it just slightly wider than Apple’s 12.7mm iPad tablet. The larger tablet also boast a 5MP rear camera and a front-facing one. Both devices will go on sale in April 2011.

Acer also took the opportunity today to announce a 4.8″ hybrid smartphone/tablet device. Also yet to be named, the smartphone is similar to the Dell Streak, but is definitely more powerful. It sports a 1024×480 screen resolution (a ridiculous resolution for a phone), a 21:9 aspect ratio, an 8MP camera with an LED Flash, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and a Gyroscope/accelerometer combo that makes it ideal as a portable gaming device. It also launches in April 2011.

Beyond ridiculously awesome screen resolutions, all three devices run on Android (Android). Acer did not reveal in its press releases which version each will run, but we’re hoping at least one of these devices will run the Gingerbread OS (Android 2.3) or even Honeycomb (Android 3.0?).

During its media blitz today, Acer also revealed the ICONIA, a hybrid laptop/tablet with a dual-screen running Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS. Instead of using a keyboard, the ICONIA uses a touch-based keyboard and gesture controls. It has 4 GB of RAM, two 14-inch multitouch displays, and an Intel Core i5 CPU.

iOS 4.2 Ends the iPad's Wait for Multitasking

Apple is finally bringing multitasking to the iPad. While iOS 4.2 introduces a slew of media, app and printing updates to the Apple tablet, you'll find that your day-to-day use of the iPad is changed most by multitasking and folders.

Upgraders will get access to folders, which can save you from scrolling through endless pages of apps on the home screen. Much as you would on the iPhone or iPod touch, just press and hold an app icon, and drag it onto another one to create a new folder on the home screen. The new AirPrint adds wireless printing capability to the iPad, while AirPlay is an expansion and rebranding of AirTunes that lets you stream music, photos and video to your Apple TV and other AirPlay-enabled devices, many of which will be launching this fall.

The iPad Mail app gets bolstered by much-needed messaging, which sorts your mail into conversations. Game Center brings social competition and leaderboards to your marathon iPad 'Angry Birds' sessions, but is otherwise just as underwhelming as the iPhone version. Losing the Hardware Orientation Lock

We've been using a dev version of 4.2 for a few weeks, and we most regret the loss of the iPad's hardware orientation lock, which has been repurposed as a mute button. With all the reclined reading we're doing, the lock was handy for quickly switching from portrait to landscape mode, or locking while going horizontal. The interaction works on the smaller iPhone, but is needlessly complex on the iPad; compare a simple button to a process that will usually involve two hands (one to stabilize) and four actions (double tap, swipe right, tap). While it's interesting that Apple is effectively reprogramming dedicated hardware buttons, it should be an optional, or at least a software-reversible change.

GOOGLE (FREE) You can find Google through your mobile browser, but the app is a major time-saver. The voice search function is seamless. A recent update put the "Goggles" service within the app, so you can snap a photo and let Google search for information on that object. And given Google’s emphasis on mobile, the app will continue to improve.

SOUNDHOUND (FREE AND $5) You’ve probably heard of Shazam, the app that identifies songs. SoundHound is faster, and it offers a broader range of ancillary features. You can hum a tune into the phone and it’ll find the song, look up lyrics and run YouTube videos of song performances. The $5 version lets you identify an unlimited number of songs. Users of the free version get five tags monthly.

HIPSTAMATIC ($2) Scores of photography titles are in the App Store. Many are terrific, but not one matches Hipstamatic’s blend of simplicity, serendipity and art. At heart, the app is a filter that will unpredictably saturate, blur or discolor your images, among other things. The results are always surprising and often stunning. Add packs of lenses and film effects for $1 apiece.

EVERNOTE (FREE) The company advertises this as a personal digital assistant, and it’s an apt description. Evernote is a traveling notepad that synchronizes with desktop and browser software (also free). Use your iPhone to copy an image, take a photo, record a voice memo or jot down a note, and it appears on your computer (and vice versa). It also recognizes your written text, within limits. The free version stores a fair amount of information, but for $45 a year, you needn’t sweat the data limits.

ANGRY BIRDS ($1) A runaway favorite among the iPhone crowd, the app tests your ability to break down the barricades that protect green pigs. The weapon: flightless birds, launched by catapult. No wonder they’re angry. The game is easy to learn, yet challenging to play, with witty touches throughout. You can try a limited free version, but if you do, good luck resisting the paid version, with more than 800 possible scenes.

URBANSPOON (FREE) Not sure what to eat, or where? Spin Urbanspoon’s slot machine and it will dial up a suggestion. You can also select certain attributes — Japanese food, for instance, or inexpensive food — and local eateries appear. The app includes user reviews and contact information, and you can press a button for a map and directions.

STAR WALK ($3) Point your phone toward the heavens and this app identifies all you see — constellations, planets, individual stars — in brilliant clarity. If you pivot in another direction, the app follows. It’s an astonishing app that’s great to pull out during dinner parties, beach walks or sleepless nights in bed. You needn’t have a clear view of the sky to experience the starry night.

FIREFOX HOME (FREE) In the same vein as Evernote, Firefox Home is a way to synchronize your desktop and mobile lives. Once you load the app and register, Firefox Home will show your browsing history and bookmarks. If you’re reading an important document online when you leave the office, you can start the app later and pick up where you left off.

QUICKOFFICE MOBILE SUITE ($5) The next time someone e-mails you a Word, Excel or Powerpoint document, Quickoffice will open it and allow you to make quick edits from your iPhone. (Otherwise, you can open, but not edit, Microsoft Office files.) You can also create documents with the app, but it is far less useful for that purpose. Rather, Quickoffice offers a way to complete small work tasks easily while you are on the move.

REDLASER (FREE) It may not tell you if a clothing item makes you look fat, but otherwise RedLaser is a perfect shopping companion. Scan a bar code and it retrieves product information, including prices at online merchants and local stores (in case you are in the mood to haggle). Or follow a spouse or child around a store, scan what they like and you have an instant gift list. The app’s scans sometimes fail, but more often than not RedLaser works smoothly.

NewTwitter Showing Full Conversations

Twitter rolled out new feature — one that many users have been asking for since NewTwitter was unveiled: full conversation threads.

Yes, if you click on a tweet with the chat bubble icon, you'll see the detail of what that tweet was responding to in the right pane of New Twitter. Previously, you could only see one level deep into the conversation. But now, Twitter will show you an entire back and forth (assuming the users responded using the "reply" button each time). And depending on where you hop in to the conversation, you'll see all the "in reply to" message above, the tweet you clicked on in the middle, and the "replies" below in this pane.

This is a much easier way to follow conversations on Twitter, and it's something that the standalone Twitter Searchproduct has had for some time. Several third-party clients offer this functionality as well (as do Twitter's mobile apps). But this is yet another reason not to leave twitter.com.

Facebook Accounts For 1 In 4 Page Views In The U.S.

Hitwise has released another data point in favor of Facebook's domination today. According to Hitwise's data, 1 in 4 page views in the US took place on Facebook.com as of last week.

In March, Hitwise reported that Facebook overcame Google to become the largest website in the U.S. with 7.07% of all U.S. visits. Google was second at 7.03% at the time. As of September, comScore reported that Facebook was behind Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

Hitwise also says that visits to Facebook have increased by 60% from the same week last year and represented 1 in 10 US Internet visits last week. And the market share of page views for Facebook was 24.27% last week, 3.8x the volume of the 2nd ranked website YouTube.com with 6.93%.

HP's Slate 500 tablet

Hewlett-Packard Co. released its Slate 500, for $800 price on Friday.

The Slate 500, which runs Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system and is aimed at workplace users rather than consumers.

The Slate has built-in front- and rear-facing cameras, including a three-megapixel higher resolution camera on the back.It has a USB port that allows it to work with a variety of plug-in digital accessories.

But HP's tablet, which is now available through its retail store and will ship in mid-November, is priced higher than Apple's entry-level $499 iPad, has half the advertised battery life (five hours instead of 10) and does not come with the option of a cellular wireless plan, like Apple's more expensive iPads. Instead, the Slate is limited to Wi-Fi Internet connectivity.

A press release advertising the device says it is "designed specifically for business, enterprise and vertical customers looking for the mobility of a tablet, the familiarity of Microsoft Windows 7 and the ability to run custom or corporate applications."

HP, which acquired Palm earlier this year, is also at work on a consumer device that will use the webOS operating system that runs on some of Palm's smartphones.

Hala - A Bilingual,bicultural Roboceptionist

The computerized "Hala" will be able to translate not just language but nuance when dealing with multicultural visitors.

Researchers at the University of Arizona and Carnegie Mellon University are working to create a robot receptionist. What makes the effort novel is that the "roboceptionist" is bilingual and bicultural – a computer with a face and a natural language interface.

Hala wll be more flexible in dealing with language input from users. And that is where the University of Arizona comes in. We will provide both the language-specific and inter-language-related cultural capabilities so that this robot can be not just bilingual, but bicultural."

It is a bicultural robot is not one that merely switches between English and Arabic, Hala's current format, but also has both modes simultaneously active in order to spot and deal with potential cultural ambiguities and misunderstandings.

"You may speak Arabic, but you may choose to converse with the robot in English. "You may be conversing with the sensibility and the cultural background and the idioms from the Arabic world. This robot needs to understand both."

The phrase "week after week," for example, "I'm looking for the group that meets week after week" means "every week" in English. But in some Arabic dialects it can mean "every other week." Only a robot that is simultaneously facile with both lexicons can compute that this phrase is subject to cultural variation and can ask the user for clarification.

Culture affects not only the syntax and semantics of an interaction, but also the structure of the interaction, from the way greetings and closings are performed, to the form of the language used to politeness strategies.

Hala, who has a built-in backstory and personality, will adjust responses based on cues from the visitor, essentially building a model of the user throughout the interaction: Is this person high-status? Is this person American? Is this person in a hurry?

Most natural language parsers – computer translators that check for correct syntax – are trained on what is known as a Treebank corpora, or parsed sentences, generally from newswire text. News stories, however, do not usually contain questions, greetings or dialog.

The possible applications of this work for other human-computer interaction systems is also driving the research. Fong thinks the technology could be applicable to computer help-agents, multicultural information kiosks, tour guides and automated international call centers.

The Samsung Transform review

The Samsung Transform has an attractive design with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard along with a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen and a front-facing camera. The phone is comfortable to hold and has excellent call quality.

On the downside, it has a low-resolution 3.5-inch HVGA screen at 480 x 320 pixels, an 800-MHz processor that gets bogged down easily by the software, and slightly slow load times on the web.

The Samsung Transform is one of the first Sprint ID Android phones, along with the Kyocera Zio and the LG Optimus S. This allows the user to switch between different profiles like EA Games, which lets the user demo games and use EA titles for your wallpaper, or The Big Apple, which has New-York-centric apps and wallpaper.

At $149, the Transform doesn’t price right and doesn’t fit well into Sprint’s competition. For those who want a low-end QWERTY Android phone, there is the Samsung Intercept for $99. If you can live without a keyboard
, the $199 HTC Evo 4G is a better deal. If you need a keyboard, the $249 Epic 4G is worth the investment, especially when considering the cost over two years.

PayPal application for deposit checks using iPhones

A PayPal application that lets people deposit checks by scanning them with cameras built into iPhones was considered a budding success on lastweek

More than 100,000 dollars worth of checks were handled by a Mobile Check Capture feature in the 36 hours after it
.

The service, powered by BankServ, enables people to deposit money into PayPal accounts by using iPhone cameras to take pictures of checks made out to them.

Mobile Check Capture is one of the new features added to the recently released iPhone 2.7 application available online at PayPal.com/mobile or at the iTunes website run by Apple

Simply open the PayPal App, tap Tools on the bottom bar, choose Add Money From Checks and follow the prompts. The process consists of taking two pictures (front and back of the check) and entering the check amount -- much easier than trekking downtown.

Deposits take roughly six business days to appear in your PayPal account and the company recommends holding onto your checks for 15 days in case there's a problem. It's worth noting that you can't deposit more than $1,000 per day or $3,000 per month, so you might not be able to skip bank trips entirely -- unless you happen to use Chase or State Farm Bank, which have iPhone apps with a similar feature.

HasWifi tracks Inflight Wifi availability across thousands of daily flights and several major carriers through a combination of flight data mining and user contributions through a “You Tell Us” feature that allows visitors to vote Yes or No whether their latest flight had inflight internet available.

At the moment HasWiFi can only search six U.S. carriers, but founder Anthony Petito hopes to expand that pool of data soon. He also plans to offer an API so that other sites like Expedia can search HasWiFi data, eliminating the need to find a cheap flight on one site, figure out if it has Wi-Fi on another, and then go back to the original to purchase your tickets.

GrubHub- New iPhone App

GrubHub, a service that lets you order food for delivery or take out from local restaurants online or by mobile phone, released a new iPhone app and an Android app in beta last week. The company also revised its native Web app to take advantage of HTML 5 features like geolocation and client-side storage.

The new apps feature a GPS-enabled restaurant search. Users can find the restaurants that deliver near their current location, or choose to manually enter a delivery address from their smart phones. The app will display restaurants in the GrubHub directory that deliver to that location.

The GrubHub geolocation features should make it easy for travelers to order take out when they’re camping at a client’s office and don’t know what’s nearby, or if they’re too tired to leave the hotel but don’t want room service.

The new apps also let users read menus, reviews, and ratings before placing an order; search by specific items, restaurants, or cuisines from the home screen. The iPhone app lets them: save multiple addresses, past orders and credit card info so they can order regularly from a home, office or local watering hole without re-entering all their info again.

Google Chrome Extension Highlight to Search

Google published a post on their Chrome Blog highlighting some of their favorite new extensions for the Chrome web browser. It’s called Highlight to Search. And it’s very useful.

It’s such a simple thing: when it’s installed, any word you highlight with your mouse cursor on any webpage will bring up a search magnifying glass icon below it. Clicking on that will open a tiny Google Search overlay box with that word already entered. An auto-suggest drop-down also populates just in case you’re looking for something related. And clicking on any of the suggested results will open the full query in a new Chrome tab. Again, so simple, so obvious, but so useful.

The truth is that you could sort of do something similar already with Chrome. If you highlight any word and then right-click, you’ll see an option to “Search Google for XXXXXX”. But the extension saves a right-click, gives users a much nicer interface, and gives you auto-suggestions.

Twitter terminates agreement with JustSpotted

Twitter said it has terminated its relationship with JustSpotted.com, a controversial new celebrity spotting website that is slated to launch next week.

JustSpotted plans to use a combination of Twitter feeds, Facebook updates, Foursquare posts and blog updates to plot a celebrity's location anywhere around the world in near real-time. A celebrity's position is plotted on a map of the world, with information about the restaurant or other venue where they'd been spotted -- but not the actual address.

Co-founder and Chief Executive AJ Asver said the celebrity gawking website, which launches Oct. 19, is intended to indulge fans' desire to get the latest updates about the stars they love, using publicly available information volunteered by celebrities.

But JustSpotted raised alarms among privacy advocates, who say it represents a new kind of intrusion on people's lives.

"Once a celebrity might have worried about someone with a camera and a flash," said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Washington-based advocacy group, Electronic Privacy Information Center. "Now they have to worry about someone with a cellphone and a Twitter account."

JustSpotted is a new service from Scoopler, a start-up that got funding from Y Combinator in 2008. It had licensed Twitter's "firehose" data feed of all public updates for its real-time search engine, Scoopler.com.

"JustSpotted.com is not the product we licensed, and we have terminated their agreement," Twitter spokesman Matt Graves said in an e-mailed statement.

The website's Asver said in an e-mail response that its relationship with Twitter relates to Scoopler and not to JustSpotted, which would continue to aggregate updates from multiple sources including Twitter.

Sorting your Gmail Messages by Size

Gmail doesn’t offer a way to search and sort email messages.here’s an even simpler method now that won’t even require you download or install anything – it’s called findbigmail.com.
t will quickly find all the big email messages in your Gmail account that are taking up the maximum space. These messages are categorized with special labels like “Big Mail” or “Really Big Mail” to help you decide which of them should be removed to recover more space.

To get started, you simply connect your Gmail account with Find Big Mail using Google’s OAuth. It then scans all your messages for their sizes and send you an email notification once the scan is over.

You can then log into your Gmail account and act on messages marked as “Big Mails” to instantly reclaim space.

Since the mails are categorized in labels, you can use the usual search filters to find all the less-important email. For instance a query like label:big-mail has:attachment PDF will find the emails that have big PDF attachments and so on.

Internally, Big Mail connects to your Gmail account via IMAP and retrieves only the sizes and not the full content of the email messages. And since it uses a temporary token, it won’t have access to your Gmail account forever. That said, I think a lot of us will feel more comfortable using it if we know the team who is running the show.
